The Yamaha TX 500 was a Air Cooled, Four Stroke, Two Cylinder, DOHC Classic motorcycle produced by Yamaha in 1973. It could reach a top speed of 110 mph (177 km/h). Max torque was 33.19 ft/lbs (45.0 Nm) @ 6500 RPM. Claimed horsepower was 48.01 HP (35.8 KW) @ 8500 RPM.
Overview[edit | edit source]
Yamaha broke into new territory by creating a 4-valve per cylinder engine in a production street bike with the 500cc, 4-stroke, twin cylinder TX500. In 1973 the TX500 appeared with twin overhead camshafts and two years later evolved into the XS500 which sold to the end of the decade, but never in large numbers. While it was a very innovative motorcycle much of its thunder was stolen by the rip roaring RD350.
Engine[edit | edit source]
The engine was a air cooled Air Cooled, Four Stroke, Two Cylinder, DOHC. A 72.9mm bore x 72.9mm stroke result in a displacement of just 498.0 cubic centimeters. Fuel was supplied via a double overhead cams/twin cam (dohc).
Drive[edit | edit source]
The bike has a 5-Speed transmission. Power was moderated via the Wet multi-discs.
Chassis[edit | edit source]
It came with a 3.25-19 front tire and a 3.50-18 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via Disc in the front and a Drum in the rear. The front suspension was a Telescopic fork while the rear was equipped with a Dual shocks swing arm, preload adjustable. The TX 500 was fitted with a 4.0 Gallon (15.14 Liters) fuel tank. The bike weighed just 425.05 pounds (192.8 Kg).
1973 Yamaha TX 500[edit | edit source]
The third model of Yamaha’s 4-stroke road sports category, this racy Super Sports model was, very different from its predecessors, the 650 and 750, being the first road bike to have a DOHC 4-valve per cylinder high output engine. Functions such as the worldユs first IC regulator, a CV carburetor, an full cradle frame - Duplex type" and is circular steel pipes, frame and front disc brakes were also featured on this model.
