Suzuki GSX1300R
The Suzuki GSX1300R, also known as the Hayabusa, is a motorcycle made by Suzuki. It has a 1299 cc inline-4 engine typically rated between 160 and 180 hp (110 to 132 kW), and was consistently tested as the quickest and fastest production motorcycle in the world circa 1999.
A stock Hayabusa (with a professional rider) will run a 10 second quarter mile with trap speeds approaching 135 mph. Many top speed enthusiasts modify the motorcycle with turbochargers, and turbocharged Hayabusas hold many top speed records, including the FIM 1350cc world record of 252.832 mph (406.894 km/h). This is the fastest timed average (two way) anywhere in the world for an open wheel motorcycle, and the fastest AMA US record for an open wheel bike. During the record pass the onboard GPS recorded 261 mph (420 km/h) as a top measured speed.
The name Hayabusa comes from the Japanese name for the Peregrine Falcon, known for its speed. Many also consider it something of a joke at the expense of the Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird, which was prior to the Hayabusa the fastest production motorcycle: the Peregrine Falcon is a predator of the common blackbird.
Subsequently, bikes were released to challenge the Hayabusa, including the BMW K1200S and the Kawasaki ZX-12R. However, due to the voluntarily imposed speed limiters, these models were unable to challenge the original 1999 Hayabusa's claim to the highest production motorcycle top speed in history.
Notoriety
When introduced for the 1999 model year, the Hayabusa was an unadulterated speed machine. This edge has been dulled only a little in subsequent model years (2001 and later) by an electronic speed limiter when the major Japanese motorcycle manufacturers realized that the power and speed wars among flagship sportbikes would not end and would eventually lead to increased government regulation, an unfavorable public image (due to more fatal accidents or higher insurance premiums), or both. The top speed of all Hayabusa motorcycles since then has been limited by the onboard computer to 300 km/h (186 mph).
Even the newer, slower bikes have landed Suzuki bad press. Ben Roethlisberger and Kellen Winslow II, two of the most promising young players in the National Football League, were both seriously injured while driving a GSX1300R and GSX-R 750, respectively.
Performance
In a straight line race this motor cycle can out run a Lamborghini Diablo, beating it in acceleration and top speed. While the Diablo runs 0 to 60 mph in 4.9 seconds, the Hayabusa will take it on in 3.25. And beat it all the way through while the stock Lamborghini tops out at 295 km/h, the Hayabusa can top out at around 308 km/h. This can be seen most valuable at times seeing as the turbo charged Hayabusa can reach over 400 km/h while still keeping at a fraction of the price.

Notice in 2005 Suzuki began making the turn signal covers clear and using colored bulbs. It is common for people to buy these clear lenses along with the bulbs for older bikes.

2007
For 2007 Suzuki disappointed most Hayabusa fans by not making good on the persistent speculation about a new model. Hopefully they will correct it in 2008. One thing interesting is that Suzuki changed the Hayabusa to have a more Kawasaki like paint scheme (read solid colors), while Kawasaki introduced their limited edition ZX1400, which looks more like a traditional Suzuki paint scheme.
2008 Hayabusa
All the guesswork about about the new Hayabusa will end Wed June 27 between 5:30-6:30pm at the Mirage Hotel in Las Vegas Nevada during the Suzuki Dealer meeting. The rest of the world will know Thursday whether it is a Hayabusa 1500 or Hayabusa 1600 or a new iteration of the 1300. This will be an ahead of schedule release, as new models are normally introduced around September. As Suzuki plans to release many new models.
- Update: The 2008 Hayabusa will be a 1340 increasing horsepower by 12% to 195 hp. It will have more compression. Pictures to come later tonight.
Trivia
- This bike was used in the Indian movie Dhoom. The negative lead in the movie was shown using it as the getaway vehicle after conducting heists. The bike & the film, both went on to acquire cult status in India.
FAQ
What is the Choke Lever for?
Since the hayabusa is fuel injected, the choke acts as a fast idle.
Why does my display say F1? It is actually saying FI indicating that there is possibly a problem with the fuel injection system or maybe just the computer itself. However, the most common reason for a hayabusa to display this is simply when you use the on/off run switch next to the throttle to kill it.
