In 2002, a limited-production of the Triumph Daytona 955i was offered. The 955i CE had several noteworthy additions to and differences from the non-CE '02 double-sided swing arm Daytona 955i.
The 200 units of the
was painted in Aston (British Racing)
Green.
In 2002, 46 units of limited-production Special Edition (SE) Daytona 955i
was offered, and are considerably more rarer. The 955i Special Edition model
has the same specifications as the Centennial Edition, except with Tornado
Red body work and without the centennial logo badge on the fuel tank.
They were built in March 2002, just before a factory fire. Initially built for the German market, they were converted to UK specifications and sold in the UK due to low availability of new Triumphs due the fire.
The 955i CE features
- 46 units made - One color option of Tornado Red was offered.
- Carbon fiber inlaid panels between the gas tank and tail fairing.
- Carbon fiber rear wheel hugger. - Single-sided swing arm (like the previous and later Daytona 955i). - Forged steel crankshaft, forged steel connecting rods, and forged aluminum pistons; non-CE/SE 955i engines had cast pistons. These engine components are the most distinctive CE/SE-specific options, and increased the maximum power output significantly compared to the cast-component engines.
Engine[edit | edit source]
The engine was a Liquid cooled cooled Four stroke, transverse three cylinder, DOHC, 4 valves per cylinder.. The engine featured a 12.0:1 compression ratio. It employed wet aluminium alloy Nikasil surfaced liners with a bore of 79mm. Stroke was 65mm as the previous generation 885cc and 955cc engines. Ignition was electronic and the fuelling was by a sequential port injection electronically managed system from Hitachi. Quoted output was 149 hp DIN, which put it very close to the opposition of the day. It did however develop high torque at lower revs than the 4 cylinder sports bikes, which made it easy and relaxing to ride on twisty roads.
It featured forged pistons, and of course forged conrods and crankshafts. Some sites indicate that standard Daytonas made do with cast items, but this is true only for the pistons. All Triumph engines in living memory have used forged rods and cranks.
Drive[edit | edit source]
Power was moderated via a wet multi-plate clutch driven directly from the crankshaft through straight cut gears. The gearbox featured six speeds, all indirect. Final drive was by chain.
Chassis[edit | edit source]
It came with a 120/70 ZR17 front tire and a 190/50 ZR17 rear tire. Stopping was achieved via 2 x 320 mm Discs, 4 piston calipers in the front and a Single 220 mm disc, 2 piston caliper in the rear. The front suspension was a 45 mm Forks with dual rate springs and adjustable preload, compression and rebound damping while the rear was equipped with a Monoshock with adjustable preload, compression and rebound damping. The Daytona 955i Special Edition was fitted with a 21 Liters / 5.5 US gal / 4.6 Imp gal fuel tank. The bike weighed just 188 kg / 414 lbs.
