The 1988 MY Gilera XR1 125 has, at its heart, a liquid-cooled, two-stroke, 124cc, single cylinder powerplant that was paired to a six-speed manual transmission with a chain final drive, and can reach a maximum power output of 23 horsepower and 18 Nm of torque.

Standard fittings include a dual seat with passenger grab rails, a rear luggage rack, wide handlebars with hand-guards, dual headlights, a Paioli upside-down telescopic front fork coupled to a Boge monoshock in the rear, laced wheels with off-road tires mounted on them, an engine mud-guard and a small, under-seat exhaust system.
